Question by Robert O'brie:

Caught impersonating a convicted US sex offender on facebook?

I'm English. A few months ago, I stumbled upon a US documentary about sex offenders. There was one guy the documentary focused on and interviewed throughout, who I became quite obsessed with, due to his charisma and psychopathic status. Only his first name was given, and I began searching the sex offender registry for the state in which he was incarcerated. I couldn't find him (was he released now and living somewhere other than the state he was incarcerated in?); but there was a guy who looked nothing like the man in the documantary but shared the same first name. I used the man's full name, along with a screen print of the man in the documentary, to create a facebook page.

So, basically, I used a man's picture from a TV documentary, along with the name of an unrelated sex offender who shared the same first name, to create the profile. I had no details on the profile, just the picture, and added a couple of friends for a laugh and that was about it. A couple of randomers added me as well... I didn't use it to insult anybody or to really do anything with it. The account just lay there gathering dust.

Today, I tried to login, and the account was locked as of two days ago. I was told that the account had been accessed from the United States. I was shown a map which indicated that the login occured in the state where the guy from the sex offender registry lived. An IP was given, and after looking it up, it appears to be a government IP. Perhaps there was concern as to whether a convicted sex offender was using facebook... but then the picture was of a completely different guy. But then, maybe it was the guy in the picture that had drawn attention, not the name, who knows.

What do you think is likely to happen? Could the police investigate me? I know I used "impersonated" in the title here but I haven't truly impersonated anyone as I merely used an image from a television documentary with an unrelated name (unrelated surname, anyway). I commited no immoral activity through the account. I'm less concerned about legal action (I'm not exactly McKinnon and haven't directly impersonated anyone), and more concerned about a long stay in a mental hospital. I've been treated for bipolar and psychosis for years and don't want to go back there... my shrink will be appalled. I know the whole thing was stupid and I'll never do anything like it again.

I look forward to you being sent to the USA, and when you get to prison you can meet him for real.
